How to stay safe this Halloween

On Halloween night, there are hundreds of children per block, all looking for their fair share of candy. From ghoulies and ghosties, and other things that go bump in the night, it can be very hard to see some of the children in their costumes; it can take more concentration to drive safely than any other time of the year. That’s why Mosaic Insurance, your local Prescott insurance broker, is here to help you build good driving habits and keep yourself and others safe this Halloween.

Children and adults can tend to be preoccupied during Halloween. This lack of attention can lead to lack of safety and common sense when it comes to being around vehicles and the road. Children may not see your vehicle, or may assume that you see them and not worry about the car hurdling towards them. Stay on the defensive and follow these safe driving tips to help you and your family have a safe and fun Halloween.

  • Don’t use any cell phones or electronic devices like navigation systems or radios. Radios and navigation systems in many cars can detract from the awareness -- both visually and auditorily.
  • Pay attention to crosswalks, intersections, and the sides of the road. Children tend to walk across the street to get to another house without warning, so keeping a vigilant eye is important during Halloween, especially since many costumes are black or other dark colors.
  • Drive well below the speed limit in residential areas. This will allow you time to slam on the breaks if a child happens to jump out in front of you.
  • Do not pass other vehicles that have stopped or pulled over -- they could be letting out or picking up children, and passing them could put them in a dangerous position.
  • If you have children, make sure to instruct them on the rules what to do around cars and when crossing the street. Instruct them to never enter the vehicle of a stranger, and always make sure that they look both ways before crossing the street. Safe driving is far easier if there are less hazards and children to think about. Put a lighted jack-o- lantern on the dash of your car to make it stand out among the crowd.
  • Make sure your child’s costume incorporates reflective tape, or that the child has some kind of lights either in hand or on the costume. Nothing is easier to spot at night than a light or reflective tape.
  • If you are dropping off children, make sure to pick a safe place and turn on your hazard lights to inform other drivers that you are stopping for a reason.

Following these tips can help you and others stay safe this Halloween. Halloween is a time meant for fun, so let's keep it that way. If everyone does their part, Halloween can be one of the safest nights of the year. That’s what Mosaic Insurance is hoping for.
