Back to School Safety Tips

It’s the beginning of a new school year and that means a fresh start for all of us. Our traffic already feels heavier than it did just a few weeks ago and it’s going to take a little longer to get to our destination. Mosaic Insurance in Prescott would like to cover a few safety basics when it comes to sharing the road with the extra cars and buses.

•    Know the procedures for dropping off and picking up children at school

•    Don't double park; it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles

•    Load and unload children in designated areas, not across the street from the school

•    Stop at the stop line, even when making a right-hand turn. Wait for pedestrians to clear the crosswalk before you proceed. This will keep pedestrians safe and potentially away from the flow of traffic.

•    When in a school zone obey the speed limit and when flashers are blinking, stop and wait for pedestrians using the crosswalk.

•    Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign

•    Be aware of your surroundings. Be cautious of children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas

•    Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way.

•    Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.

•    Be courteous. It doesn’t matter who has the right of way, yield to pedestrians. It could save harm or injury.

•    Never pass a bus if it is stopped to load or unload children.

•    If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, stop. It’s the law.

•    Take your time and stop far enough back to allow children extra space.  Children are carrying extra items; backpacks, books and sometimes musical instruments. Kids will sometimes goof-off and take extra risks.

Visibility of the road just ahead of you is blocked if you’re driving behind a school bus. Allow more space between you and the bus. A greater following distance will make it easier for you to stop, as well as see what’s ahead. It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children

We all have places to go, jobs to tend to and appointments to keep. As a general rule of thumb, leave a little early to allow extra time to get there. Mosaic Insurance in Prescott wishes you a safe and happy school year. This is also a good time to review your auto insurance. It’s easy to do by scheduling an appointment at 928-458-7344
