Tips for driving in winter and the fog

Mosaic Insurance provides tips to help drivers adapt to different weather situations and lower their auto insurance in Prescott. It’s very exciting when it snows and many people take a day off to enjoy it. However, some people choose to make journeys on the road. Driving in snow can be extremely dangerous, and taking precautions to drive safely is important. Mosaic Insurance provides tips on how to drive safely in all different types of weather in Prescott.

When driving in the snow:

  • Wear appropriate footwear
  • Accelerate gently and keep your speed down.
  • Leave a bigger gap between vehicles and anticipate a slower response from your car.
  • Drive in the clearest lane to avoid snow and ice. Try to stick to main roads, where traffic will have cleared lots of the snow already.
  • Keep calm and in control when steering, lightly using gears and brakes and gently steering against a skid if you encounter one.

When driving in fog:

  • Familiarize yourself with the fog light switches in your car, so you know how to operate them when you need to.
  • Don’t rely on automatic lights, as they may not activate properly due to ambient light from other sources and don’t rely on daytime running lights as they do not illuminate the back of your car.
  • Only use your fog lights when visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres (109 yards) and turn them off when you no longer need them.
  • Ensure that headlights are dipped at all times.
  • Leave a bigger gap between vehicles than you usually would to allow you to stop in time.
  • Do not use the car in front as a guide to the path ahead as you may end up too close to them to stop safely when required.

When driving on the ice:

  • Accelerate gently and in a higher gear to avoid slipping and keep your speed down.
  • Leave a much bigger gap between vehicles than you usually would and anticipate a slower response from your car, especially when braking.
  • In icy weather, one accident can turn into multiple accidents, so be aware of other vehicles approaching or losing control, as a result of an accident.
  • Keep calm and in control when steering, lightly using gears and brakes and gently steering against a skid if you encounter one.
  • If possible, avoid attempting to go up or down hills.
