I Ride

I ride, and those who know me know I ride. They also know that is not about to change. And, for whatever reason, those who care about me - my fiancé, family, friends, and co-workers – want me to come home from each and every ride safely.

We make riding choices every time we throw a leg over. My choices about when, where, and how I ride are influenced by how much I care for the people in my life. To be perfectly honest, I want to come home from each ride safely too – but it’s more than that. They don’t want to lose me – and I don’t want to leave them.

Who do you have in your life that wants you to come home? Your kids? Your wife or husband? Your brothers and sisters? Your parents? Your friends?

I am free to decide how I’ll ride; not because the government tells me to; not because my riding buddies tell me to; but because I choose to.

For me, and for the ones I care about, I choose:

  • To ride within my own limits (skill, judgment, fatigue, etc.
  • To keep my riding skills sharp (take training, practice)
  • To dress for comfort, visibility, and protection
  • To wear the safest gear that protects my body, my hands, my feet, my eyes, and my head
  • To get my eyes up and look well down the road and all the way through my turns
  • To ride a motorcycle with anti-lock brakes
  • To take my motorcycle in for regular tune-ups
  • To promptly replace and fix malfunctioning parts
  • To reject more passengers than allowed
  • To abstain from riding if I have been drinking or using any type of drug that impairs my coordination or reaction time
  • To follow speed limits and avoid weaving carelessly between other motor vehicles
  • To slow down during bad weather
  • To refrain from tailgating other motor vehicles
  • To forego customizing my motorcycle that would compromise safety or violate any laws

There are a couple places in town that offer a MSF Basic Ridercourse for beginners. They include motorcycles, workbook, 5 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of on bike instruction and a helmet if needed. There are also classes for Intermediate and Experienced riders to help hone your skills. There are skills practice classes to help with basic skills of swerving, stopping, cornering and low-speed maneuvering and night riding. Other classes involve hazard avoidance exercises including stopping, swerving and obstacle handling.

Over 80% of multi-vehicle accidents involving a motorcycle are not the motorcyclist's fault. A motorcycle rider is more vulnerable than other motorists, and motorcycle accident, motorcycle collisions, and motorcycle crashes often involve the most serious types of injury, including brain injury, burns, fractures, breaks, dislocations, neck injury, back injury, nerve injury, paralysis, and spinal cord injury.

Motorcycle riders are often injured, through no fault of their own, by negligent car drivers and truck drivers who fail to see the motorcycle or fail to yield the right of way to the motorcycle.

Your choices are up to you and no one else. It is our wish that all of you come home safely from each and every ride to the ones who love you. Honor them with your choices. To them, your life and health are the gifts that keep on giving.
